Guitar Lessons
I have a Bachelors Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas and have taught guitar lessons in the D/FW area beginning in the year 2000, previously at Mars Music and currently at Nadine's Music Manor.
Teaching Style:
I think the best way for teaching guitar is in a relaxed and fun environment by letting the student work toward their personal goals on the instrument.
On a weekly basis I encourage students to pick songs that they want to learn to work on in their lesson (Or I know tons and can suggest some great ones).
I find that when students have the freedom to pick their own repertoire they tend to be more enthusiastic about learning and put more effort into it.
Nothing is more fun and fulfilling as a teacher than to hear a student making wonderful music and knowing that you had a part in that process.
While students learn their favorite songs I help them use these examples to learn good technique and basic music terms.
When it seems in the students best interest for attaining their personal goals I also offer more traditional music education using one of the following (decided after the first lesson or two):
Mel Bay Children's Guitar Method
Mel Bay Mastering The Guitar 1A
Solo Guitar Playing by Noad
Idealistically, my experience is that students do best with a balance of the two.
Having students work through one of these books while they learn songs gives them practical application and hands on experience applying music theory to what they enjoy playing most.
